The World Reimagined is a ground-breaking, national art education project to transform how we understand the Transatlantic Slave Trade and its impact on all of us.

The World Reimagined will see trails of large Globe sculptures in cities across the UK in August- October of 2022, created by artists to bring to life the reality and impact of the Transatlantic Slave Trade. The trails will be the centre of a broader public engagement programme – with hundreds of community groups, sporting and cultural institutions taking part across the country.

We are now looking for an exceptional person to join us as our Director of Communications & Marketing to deliver our strategy which creates and maintains a positive and inclusive understanding of The World Reimagined among key stakeholders including host cities, funding partners, political and media audiences – and, of course, the public!

At this key moment for racial justice in our society and across the world, this is an exciting opportunity to play an important role in bringing people together to explore and process our shared history so we can create a future of empathy and grace, together.

THE ROLE

Reporting to the Director of Strategy and Operations, your role in projecting the values and vision of The World Reimagined will be critical to the success of the project. We are a small (but mighty!) team, so this position is for someone who combines strong strategic insight and common sense with the ability to do the doing – it is a hands-on role!

The role will focus on these main goals

  • To rapidly develop and implement a communications strategy which creates and maintains a positive and inclusive understanding of the project among key stakeholders including host cities cities, funding partners, political and media audiences, and the public;
  • To identify potential communication risks to the success of the project and to work with the Director of Strategy & Operations and Board to mitigate them.
  • To develop strong relationships with the media and ensure that they have a full understanding of the purpose of the project and the media opportunities it offers;
  • In accordance with the overall communications strategy, to develop specific media strategies and branding approaches to project the project to a wider public audience;
  • To act as a spokesperson for The World Reimagined to journalists, broadcasters and commentators;
  • To ensure that the Board is appropriately advised on all communications issues and to provide briefing for spokespeople ahead of media interviews;
  • To provide communications and media resources (such as model press statements and Q&As) for partner cities and other partner organisations;
  • To ensure consistent messaging through oversight of all content on the website and across all social media platforms;
  • To draft media articles targeted at both national and regional media outlets;
  • To develop a close working partnership with colleagues.

SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

We are looking for a person with substantial, proven experience in delivering significant scale communications and marketing activities.  They’ll be able to hit the ground running by matching their ability to build a broad variety of relationships with the capacity to take in and process a lot of information quickly and thoughtfully.

The following will be assets for this role:

  • A keen interest and understanding of the history and themes to which The World Reimagined speaks;
  • A proven track record and ability to work closely with a diverse group of stakeholders in a fast-paced environment;
  • Stamina and clarity of thought and analysis under pressure;
  • An excellent understanding and knowledge of the media and sectors relating to The World Reimagined – in particular education, the arts, and politics;
  • Experience of managing up, advising and collaborating with senior colleagues;
  • Excellent presentation and written and oral communication skills;
  • Demonstrable evidence of collaborative behaviour;
  • Experience managing a wide range of stakeholders;
  • A willingness to work flexibly and a commitment to delivering the project to its tight deadlines.
