Community: Becoming Black & British is coming to Leeds!

We are proud to announce that The World Reimagined, in partnership with Remembering Oluwale, is bringing Community: Becoming Black & British to Leeds: an inspiring documentary and heritage project that explores the legacy of Black British community organisations from the 1970s to 2000. This initiative is funded by the National Heritage Lottery Fund.
More than just a documentary, this is a powerful platform for education, empowerment, and intergenerational dialogue. The project will bring together teams of young people and industry professionals to capture the lived experiences of Black Britons, illuminating the stories of resilience, resistance, and cultural contribution that have too often been excluded from mainstream history.
Leeds has long been a site of both struggle and strength, and this project takes on profound significance in a city shaped by its activism and multicultural heritage. In collaboration with Remembering Oluwale, whose work honours the life and legacy of David Oluwale and the broader fight for justice, this initiative will support young filmmakers to engage deeply with local history.
Together, we will preserve untold stories while equipping the next generation with the tools to shape their own narratives. Through filmmaking, community dialogue, and historical exploration, Community: Becoming Black & British in Leeds will ensure that the contributions of Black Britons are recognised, remembered, and reimagined for generations to come.
We are now looking for an exceptional person to join us as our Heritage Lead in Leeds to lead our work in engaging stakeholders and building our Journey of Discovery Archive.
